Masters Moment #7: Rory Visits Parts Unknown
To start the 2011 golf season, there was a lot of hype surrounding a 21 year-old, Northern Irishman named Rory McIlroy. He was being tabbed as the next big thing in golf. He was a rising star, looking to add a major championship to his resume.
The 2011 Masters looked like it would be a coming out party for McIlroy. He came out of the gates strong with an opening round 65. A 69 on Friday and a 70 on Saturday gave Rory a 4 shot lead heading into the final round.
But then it all went terribly wrong. He wasn’t great on the front 9, but still lead even after going out in 37. It was the 10th tee that spelled doom for Rory.
The triple bogey was his undoing. Eventually, Charl Schwartzel took home a Green Jacket and Rory’s final round 80 looked really bad at the time. He more than made up for it a couple months later, however, at the US Open.
