Masters Moment #27: Nick Faldo Wins His Third Masters
I’ll admit, the 1996 Masters isn’t so much about Nick Faldo winning as it is about Greg Norman melting down. But we will talk about Norman in a later post. For now, let’s focus on Faldo.
As he entered the final round, it seemed as if Faldo was destined to finish second. His third green jacket was all but on Greg Norman’s back. But as we found out during the final round of the 1996 Masters, there is a reason they don’t give out green jackets Saturday night.
Faldo benefited from the aforementioned Norman meltdown as he came from six shots back and ended up winning by five.
It was Faldo’s third Masters victory and his sixth major. The win at the ’96 Masters was Faldo’s second to last professional victory (his last came at the 1997 Nissan Open) and it cemented his legacy as one of the greatest golfers of the 20th century.
