On Tap this Week: 9/19/13

Tournament: The Tour Championship
East Lake GC, Atlanta, GA
Dates: 9/19/13 – 9/22/13

After the season long race for the FedEx Cup, we have reached the grand finale, the Tour Championship. So get your Coca-cola ready because we are heading to Atlanta.

For those of you that understand the FedEx Cup points system, you can breeze through this portion of the post. For the rest of us that don’t have a PhD in mathematics from MIT, I will attempt to explain what is going on.

Tiger Woods, Henrik Stenson, Adam Scott, Zach Johnson, and Matt Kuchar are in the driver’s seat. No fancy math needed there. A win this week and they are your FedEx Cup champ. Simple as that.

If they do win, they will also collect a small prize of $10 million.

For the other 25 dudes teeing it up this week, you will need the aforementioned PhD in mathematics to figure out how they can win. Now, one thing I do know, the closer you are to the top, the better chance you have of winning the thing.

That is due to this weeks reset. Check out the official point totals here. The PGA Tour will set you straight. I would assume someone there is handy with a slide rule and will calculate the final point totals Sunday night. Then again, you never know. Headquarters is in Florida after all. If I remember correctly, they have had trouble counting things in the past.

ANYWAY, I am looking forward to this week’s action. With only 30 players in the field, literally anyone can win the FedEx Cup. So that is enough for me to tune in.

But if you are looking for a little more intrigue, Tiger Woods could crack the $20 million mark for THIS SEASON with a win. It is an astonishing number that, as recently as a few years ago, was unthinkable. Most guys don’t accumulate that much prize money in their entire career and Eldrick is right there.

Of course he could win the FedEx Cup without winning this week, but, again, supercomputers are getting involved to figure out how.

A win for Tiger would also lock up player of the year in my eyes. Another guy that could take that honor with a win is Adam Scott.

The Master’s champ would get a strong look for player of the year if he were to hoist the Cup Sunday night. And I am sure he would look good doing it.

(I just consulted my girlfriend and she said, yes, he would in fact look good doing it.)

Who do I have winning? Well, I have been riding the Jordan Spieth train for several weeks now. He really has no pressure on him. Tiger, Adam, PHIL. We have all seen them buckle under pressure at some points this year. It doesn’t seem like Spieth is dealing with the same demons. He is a rookie after all. No past heartbreak to think about. No collapses at the US Open (PHIL!). No rules related brain farts.

I think he gets it done. And when the NASA super computer used to calculate FedEx Cup standings spits out it’s final report, the winner will be Jordan Spieth.

I could easily transition into the “What I Would Have Done with $10 million at age 20” portion of this post, but there isn’t enough space on this blog. Enjoy the weekend everyone.

On Tap Recommendation: Duh, anything with Coke this week. Jack and Coke is a good choice. Captain and Coke, ditto. You really can't go wrong with this recipe: Coke, booze, ice. Cheers everyone!
